Honestly, I think it depends on the person. and your sense of adventure. Bankrupting yourself at a ridiculously expensive restaurant (only to be starving an hour later) usually won't impress anyone. Finding that hole in the wall diner that looks like a dump outside but looks Greco-Roman inside, with inexpensive but GOOD food (and enough of it) can be a much better experience. Spending a hundred bucks on a chunk of meat the size of your palm, no matter HOW good it is, is going to leave you HUNGRY an hour after it's done.
The other thing is to be certain that wherever you go, your date feels SAFE. So if it's a first date, you should play it safe. You CAN do this while still making it romantic as well, it just takes work, and a bit of research. I remember the first girl I ever took to a French restaurant., We were seeing a play afterwards (Katz, I think? Long time ago). I called immediately prior to leaving the house to ensure the food would be READY when we walked in. As in pre-ordered and waiting at the table, as we were on a bit of a time crunch. We got there, the table wasn't ready, the food hadn't even been started and they parked us at the bar. I was, of course, furious, but trying very hard to make it seem like it was no big deal.

She'd never had one, but I'd gotten addicted to them while I was in Saudi. So we had them double wrapped and snuck them into the theater. The play was ok, but we couldn't stop giggling as we snuck bites of our food while everyone else looked down their noses at us. Irreverence has its virtues, at times. It was memorable, and the BEST first date you can ever have is one that you never forget, because it was...

Gliding. Sailing, Riding. Trekking. I was proposed to in the Eiffel Tour in Paris France after a very long real and long distance courtship with a French Turkish man which was very romantic. However on reflection I think probably no more penile buildings for a while yet. I would rather new experiences to see real reactions not staged mannerisms. A picnic, atmospheric restaurant and a meaningful memorable date with thought behind it would be appreciated. I hate red flag speed or over familiar dating.
